A Tale of Four Daniels
Etymology of the name Daniel: Meaning, origin and history of the name Daniel. From the Hebrew name דָּנִיֵּאל (Daniyyel) meaning “God is my judge”. Daniel was a Hebrew prophet whose story is told in the Book of Daniel in the Old Testament.
In the Green family Daniel is a very popular name. I am reminded of my cousin Daniel Green Jr (actually the 4th but i’ll get into that) who recently passed away. He was a hero to me and i am very sad he;s not here with us anymore. In my family the name Daniel goes back many years. Not only did my cousin have that name but my uncle (his father). His father has also passed on way too young and i miss my big uncle Dan. He kept it real and was a cherished disciplinarian in my family.
Things then get a little tricky. His father (my Maternal Grand Father) is also named Daniel Greene Jr. I know you just got confused. So did i as i did my research. I always knew my grandfather was named Daniel Green. Or at least i thought. I did not understand that we originally had an E on the end of our name until i went to my grandfather’s burial site. When i found him and grand ma’s grave i saw they had E’s on the end of thier name. His father’s name is Daniel Greene Sr of Tennessee.
Why did i choose this topic?
Some names have different spellings. I am a Green without the E. And i dont know why the E was dropped and thats a question i will ask my ancestors. Maybe they thought it more American or more simplified or a lack of education. But i never would have found this out if i did not do the leg work and visit the grave. You have to have an open mind for all possibilities.
