Using Relative Finder To Track Down Your Connections to Famous People!

What is Relative Finder?

Relative Finder is a new amazing software created by Family Search and BYU i believe to help people find connections to famous people in their family history.  Its more for novelty purposes however i think that it can help us understand how interconnected we are. I also believe it can help young people develop an interest in family history. I believe that we are all connected to each other by a mere six degrees. This site helps further cement this fact for us.

How Do You Use Relative Finder?

Relative Finder is powered by FamilySearch so you first need to go to www.familysearch.org and register for an account. Once you have registered for an account then your next step is to begin to fill out your family tree. This can be done off of memory if you like. If you use Ancestry Dot Com you can login there and download a GedCom file and upload that straight to FamilySearch.

Once you have the information or Gedcom you want to fill your pedigree chart with as much information as possible. If you dont have much info the Relative Finder will have a harder time connecting you. Once you have your pedigree chart filled out you will go to www.relativefinder.org and log in with your FamilySearch account and then be given the chance to find your relatives. Once you log in you will see a screen like below.

Creative Ways to use Relative Finder

I think that the number one thing we can use this website for is piquing curiosity in our family history.  For instance i did not know my tenth great grandfather was on the Mayflower ship. I am amazed by the people i am related too. When i got burned out with genealogy which i have been for some time it was this website that got me rengaged. I think it can do a phenomenal job in helping children become interested in Genealogy and history!

The Devil is in the details!

I love how much detail this website provides you. In the graphic to the right it shows you some details on my tenth great grandfather who was on the Mayflower. It even has a picture of the guy and i really loved that.

Again i think this only piques our curiosity. I’ve spent a few hours on google searches tracking down my ancestors. I love the information that i’m able to find and begin to teach others about my genealogy. As i do this others can get interested and i hope to use this with my foundation to teach kids that genealogy can be very cool!

Fun Ideas for Using this Website

  1. I use this website to get my family interested in where they come from. I believe its so important to get a sense of self and this website does that.
  2. As a teacher of Genealogy i like using this to show people how cool genealogy really is. For most the prospects of doing family history work baffles people. People ask me “Why do you want to research your ancestors, your here alive now.” I think this website helps teach people that we are really interconnected.
  3. I plan on making trading cards with some of my famous ancestors on them and then place my website on them so folks can find the genealogy gangster. I love the idea of using this to possibly find relatives and customers.
