Genealogy Gangster Vlog – Freedmens Bureau Records and how to search them!

Freedmen’s Bureau Records

The Genealogy Gangster Vlog

This week on the Genealogy Gangster Vlog i talk about the Freedmen’s Bureau Records. I talk about my own personal family story and how the site has helped my records. I also do some general teaching on what can be done with the records. So please stay tuned and check it out!

What is the Freedmen’s Bureau?

The Freedmen’s Bureau was founded after the abolition of slavery. It was designed to help African Americans and other indentured servants of that time. The organization helped slaves become share croppers, open bank accounts and pursue educations for their children and themselves. This dynamic organization has much to offer African American Genealogy researchers. School and Bank records contain birth places, etc that can unlock brick walls in African American genealogy.

How can the Freedmen’s Bureau help you?

African American and other researchers can find a plethora of information in the records. It is not only a gem and resource for African Americans but others as well. Many Europeans of the time served as indentured servants and could receive assistance from the Bureau once their term of indentured service was complete.

Where Do i need to go to find information?

The following websites will give you a head start on accessing the Bureau’s records that have been indexed by FamilySearch.

Once you get on those websites you will be able to research the Freedmen’s Bureau Records.

How the Freedmen’s Bureau Helped Me

Finding Records on my family has been tough. I have been hit with brick wall after brick wall. But using the freedmen’s bureau i was able to find my maternal line’s original plantation in Morgan, Georgia. Once i had that information i was able to find my family’s former slave master which allowed me to connect with the Caucasian branch of the Butts family line. I found out that i am not the only latter day saint in my family. Also finding out i have a branch of cousins in New Zealand of the Butts line who are latter day saints. I believe that finding these people will reinforce my own testimony of the gospel. Genealogy bringing families together. I’m already getting a link on my slavic part of my family. I am so proud of what i get to learn.
